Breathing-related sleep disorders
Diagnostic and treatment guidelines
Abstract
Medicine has discovered the importance of sleep and the consequences of its disorders that can lead to serious medical and psychiatric conditions that affect all people who suffer from them. The development of sleep medicine has been explosive in recent years, if we take into account that it was only 60 years ago that the REM (rapid eye movement) sleep phase was discovered and 25 that CPAP (continuous positive airway) was started to be treated pressure) to obstructive sleep apneas. Currently, approximately 90 types of sleep disorders can be described, each requiring specific measures. This is a health problem that affects millions of people. As long as the diagnosis is timely and adequate, excellent therapeutic measures are possible.
There is a high percentage of patients with these sleep disorders that have not been diagnosed and this represents a huge cost for the health system, which must take care of the complications derived from the lack of treatment (cardiovascular events, traffic accidents, work absenteeism).
As is evident in these Clinical Guidelines, respiratory sleep disorders (TRS) call several medical disciplines that must integrate the diagnostic and treatment team (neurologist, endocrinologist, cardiologist), since the approaches and the damages that are very different They occur in the individual patient.
In recent years, the dissemination of diagnostic and treatment guidelines for most diseases has become popular. The Clinical Guidelines are recommendations directed in general to the non-specialist doctor and patients, for the correct decision making on good clinical practices in the various circumstances that each disease may present. Clinicians, health authorities and health care providers consider the guides as instruments to make diagnosis and treatments more effective, and to close the gap between what clinicians do and what clinical evidence supports.
These first Uruguayan Clinical Guidelines on Respiratory Sleep Disorders will surely meet these objectives and as a result they will have the benefit of reducing the morbidity and mortality of our population by improving their health-related quality of life.
