Abstract

Background: Percutaneous vertebroplasty has been succesfully used in treating vertebral compression fractures for the last 20 years. Recently, this technique has been incorporated in our country.
Methods: So far, nine vertebroplasties were performed by our team; eight were done at one level: five procedures due to osteoporotic lumbar fractures, one upper dorsal fracture and two metastasis. The remaining procedure was done in two consecutive levels due to an osteoporotic dorso-lumbar fracture.
The paper reviews our recent experience in treating vertebral compression fractures.
Conclusions: Symptoms relief has been reached in all patients with vertebral compression fractures due to osteoporosis or metastasis.
Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a safe, effective and low-cost procedure for treating vertebral compression fractures due to diverse causes.
