Hypovitaminosis D and antiepileptic drugs

Review of evidence and recommendations

Abstract

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, also considered a hormone that regulates mineral homeostasis and maintains the concentration of calcium within normal limits. Protects the integrity of the skeleton, modulates growth and cell differentiation. There is a wide distribution of its receptors throughout the body, especially at the level of bone, digestive system and kidney. In addition to its role in calcium homeostasis, vitamin D regulates other functions called extraosseous, with possible benefits, such as the regulation of the immune system, muscle function, cardiovascular and metabolic system. There is increasing evidence about vitamin D deficiency in the population. A review conducted in 2009 by the International Osteoporosis Foundation and National Osteoporosis Foundation was aimed at knowing the status of vitamin D in different regions of the world and identifying its determinants. It reported that hypovitaminosis D is widely spread across the six continents and is re-emerging as a global public health problem.
